The windy city (not named for the reason you might expect!) that feels like you’re on the beach whilst showcasing some of the best architecture in the USA. There are so many things for kids to do in Chicago, just make sure you don’t miss:
List of Contents
The Chicago children’s museum
Located at the start of Navy Pier the Chicago Children’s Museum has everything a hands on kid could dream of from digging for dinosaur bones to hammering nails, they wont want to leave.
The Bean in the Park
Otherwise known as Cloud Gate in Millenium park is a huge shiny sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor standing proud and reflecting the beauty of the park and the surrounding architecture. Great for some unusual selfies!
The Art Institute of Chicago
Just a quick stroll from the Bean is the brilliant Art Institute of Chicago. A wonderful art gallery displaying some fantastic new collections alongside some old favourites. The facilities here are excellent and the institute is easy to navigate. Be sure not to miss some Edward Hopper favourites.
Architectural boat tour of Chicago
For the best views of Chicago’s spectacular buildings it’s best to view them by river. Tickets are widely available from the riverside or at navy peer and you will get a history lesson (and the occasional comedy show) along the way.
With enough rides to keep the kids entertained and stunning city views you could easily waste all afternoon at Navy Pier. The big wheel is a must and there are some great spots for lunch. If you’re lucky enough to visit when the weather is good make sure you walk all the way to the bottom to the beer gardens for a cold drink and some brilliant live music, soak up the atmosphere and rest your Chicago weary feet.
Magnificent Mile
If shopping’s your thing you can’t go wrong with a wander up the Magnificent Mile, with every store you can imagine and there are all the usual places for a drink or a bite to eat
Take in a Ball Game
Great fun for us Brits whatever US city we’re in but seemingly even more special in Chicago. A Cubs ball game at Wrigley Park is about as fun as it gets, even if you don’t understand all the rules.
Chicago Museum of Science and Industry
With loads of interactive exhibitions the Museum of Science and Industry is one of the best Science museums there is, don’t miss the new Robot Revolution showcasing Robots from around the world

For some other amazing family friendly American cities to visit I recommend a visit to Philadelphia with kids. I also suggest a family holiday to Washington DC.
