Beautiful My Khe Beach In Da Nang Pin Image

What I love about My Khe Beach, Da Nang and why you should add it to your beach bucket list

by Karen Quinn, Feb 10 2020

My Khe beach in Da Nang has been said to be one of the most beautiful in Vietnam. Forbes included Da Nang on their list of The 10 Most Beautiful Beach Destinations In VietnamMy Khe beach is located right in the city making it easily accessible if you’re visiting this part of Vietnam.

The beach is a 20-mile stretch of soft sand, clear warm water and gently lapping waves. It’s bordered by coconut trees, seafood restaurants, and luxury hotel chains which have sprung up over the past few years.

Facilities at My Khe Beach

A lot of effort has been made recently to clean up parts of Vietnam, this is clear on My Khe beach with plenty of opportunities to clean up and recycle your rubbish. This beautiful recycle bin is made of bamboo in the shape of a Goby fish and is designed to gobble up your recyclables.

There are public showers available if you need to change for a small fee, lockers and plenty of toilets. We saw several life guards keeping an eye on swimmers.

Things to do at My Khe Beach

On My Khe beach you can really do as much or as little as you like. You can easily (and cheaply) rent a shaded sun lounger, grab a book and relax the day away. If you want to be a little more active, then the sea is the perfect temperature for swimming and snorkelling. Or you could take part in a game of volleyball, try water skiing, parasailing or scuba diving.

My Khe is also very popular with the surfing crowd and you’ll find plenty of places to rent boards and equipment along the beach. You can even book private surf lessons while you’re here.

The beach offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and is bordered in part by forest, ideal for a hike.

But if there’s one thing you really must do at My Khe beach, it’s watch a sunset. Late afternoon is the perfect time to visit the beach, enjoy some quiet time and then watch it come alive in early evening as locals flock to the sand when it cools down a little for a game of football, meal and to watch the sun go down. Although you won’t be able to watch the sun dip into the sea – this is an East facing beach, the whole sky will light up with beautiful colours casting a magic glow over everything.

Is My Khe beach suitable for kids

Most definitely! With warm, clear water and gentle waves, it’s the perfect place for paddling and the sand is ideal for building sandcastles. The life guards and flags to indicate where we were allowed to swim made us feel very safe – obviously don’t ever take your eyes off little kids in the water.

I loved that the area around My Khe had plenty of restaurants and cafes, perfect for getting out of the sun with hot kids.

Where to eat near My Khe beach

You’re not going to go hungry visiting My Khe beach. There are plenty of beach vendors selling snacks and coconut water and the beach is lined by many restaurants, bars and hotels.

History of My Khe Beach

My Khe beach was used by American soldiers during the Vietnam war for recreational activities. They nicknamed it China beach. Da Nang is where the first US combat troops landed in Vietnam in 1965.

How to get to My Khe Beach

If you’re staying in the city of Da Nang then it’s super easy. You can walk from the city centre which will take you around 20 minutes or get a taxi or Grab which will get you there in under 10 minutes, costing around £3

From further out, you’ll arrive either at Da Nang Airport or the main train station. A taxi from the airport will get you to My Khe beach in under half an hour and will cost around £10. Or use my favourite option which is to pre book an airport transfer with Holiday Transfers for around £6 per person and beat the taxi queue.

If you’ve hired a car or motorbike and driven to My Khe beach then there is plenty of parking avaible which will cost you less than £1 for the day.

Where to stay near My Khe beach

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to finding somewhere to stay near My Khe beach. There are several luxury resorts such as the Hyatt Regency which is less than 20 minutes walk from the main area of My Khe and lovely mid level hotels bordering the beach. We loved the Haian hotel with a gorgeous rooftop pool and restaurant. A wonderful place to view the beach from above and watch the sunset over the city.

Best time to visit My Khe beach

Unusually, My Khe beach is busiest at sunrise and sunset. It can feel pretty much deserted at other times. I recommend planning to spend the afternoon and early evening at My Khe, visit one of the air conditioned restaurants when the sun is at it’s peak and then play in the sea before the beach starts to busy up at sundown. Definitely stay for the sunset, the atmosphere is so much fun.

If you’re hoping to take advantage of the surf season then you’ll need to visit between October and February when the waves start to pick up.

My Khe is busiest between April and August when rainfall is at its lowest, it can be blistering hot though so be sure to bring plenty of suncream, water and stay in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

What to take to My Khe beach

Any day at the beach requires a few essentials and My Khe is no different. You can easily hire a sun lounger but you’ll definitely need a few towels and a nice blanket to sit on.

The sun is extremely strong in this part of the world so make sure you bring loads of suncream, even in rainy season or on a cloudy day. And re apply more often than you think is necessary. We found sun cream (especially the brands we recognised) to be very expensive in Vietnam so it’s one of the few things I highly recommend bringing over with you. Especially if you have a sensitive child. Piper seems to be allergic to all brands apart from P20 so make sure you bring some you’ve tried at home before you travel. With the sun as strong as it is I also recommend some long sleeved cover ups and long sleeved rash vests are a life saver if you have kids who like to constantly run in and out of the water.

You will be able to buy pretty much everything else on My Khe from the beach sellers or the small grocery shops along the edge of the beach.
